1. Do I have to pay to volunteer?

No. The only costs are your accomodation, food and transportation. Now that we have accommodation next to the school, transport costs have been greatly reduced.

2. Do I need a visa?

To volunteer in Cambodia you only need your regular tourist visa which is valid for one month and requires one passport photo. This can be purchased at any Cambodian airport or border entrance for $20 USD. To work in Cambodia, or if you intend to stay and volunteer for longer than one month, you will need to purchase a business visa, which is extendable. Please ensure you apply for a business visa on entry if you are considering staying longer than one month in Cambodia.

3. How do I organize my travel plans to Cambodia?

That's easy. ABOUTAsia is a local travel company working hand in hand with the ABOUTAsia Schools Foundation. They can take care of all your travel needs. Contact Kelly at cambodia@asiatravel.com

4. How is ABOUTAsia Schools staffed?

ABOUTAsia Schools is currently administered by Sarah Pycroft, volunteer coordinators and directed by Andy Booth. All volunteer inquiries should be emailed to Sarah at sarah@aboutasiaschools.org. Please state your prefered placement dates and institution from the positions available at www.aasenglishprogramme.wordpress.com.

5. Where are the schools located?

PREY CHROUK school is about 42Km West of Siem Reap, It takes 30 minutes by car or one hour by tuk tuk to travel there. Krobe Riel is 8km and Austrian Primary is 5km from Siem Reap. Other schools are nearer and many are in Siem Reap itself.

Siem Reap is Cambodia's third largest city and home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, the biggest religious site in the world. It's international airport offers good connections from the main regional hubs of Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

6. How much money will I need to live?

This is rather up to you! Due to its proximity to the Angkor Wat temples there is a wide range of accommodations in Siem Reap available starting from $5 to over $1,000 per night! Meals also vary in price, but you can eat out reasonably well for around $5 USD at a restaurant /cafe? or from as little as $1 from a street vendor.

7. How is ABOUTAsia Schools funded?

ABOUTAsia Schools is funded from providing guiding services to tourists (ABOUTAsia is a local Cambodian tour company founded expressly for this purpose) and donations generously given directly to the organization. There is more information concerning ABOUTAsia travel at http://www.asiatravel-cambodia.com. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated. Click here to donate.

8. How can I help?

We need people with variety of skills to help us improve the area school and to assist in expanding the work of ABOUTAsia Schools. If you have teaching, building, or gardening skill or just want to help out with odd jobs around the school, please let us know.

9. Can I help from my home country?

Absolutely! Primarily we need media coverage about our efforts and the tour company that provides funding. If you know any journalists, PR or media contacts, please let us know. Every tourist who uses ABOUTAsia for travel planning (itineraries, guiding, local transportation and hotel bookings) in Cambodia directly contributes to ABOUTAsia Schools's finances. Please visit us on Facebook.

10. What do I need to bring with me?

The school dress code requirs covered shoulders, knee length dresses for women and long trousers for men. Bring work clothes if you will be helping with building maintenance or decorating. If you have any books especially - with pictures of your home country - they would be most welcome. We also request that all volunteers bring postcards from their home country to contribute for a collage we are creating.

11. How long do most volunteers stay?

The time varies from 30 days to months! If you have the skills we can accommodate your efforts to help the school. Ideally we would like a minimum commitment of 30 days if you are teaching at the school. Long-term volunteers are greatly encouraged as their efforts make so much difference!

12. Do I need to be referenced or police checked?

Due to the difficulty in applying for police checks in some countries, we have not made this a mandatory part of the application process. However, due to the sensitivities regarding working with children, particularly in Cambodia, we strictly request all volunteers to ensure they are never left alone with less than three children at any given time. Any failure to observe this rule will result in your immediate removal from the program.

13. Will I require an interview?

No but you will be required to complete an APPLICATION FORM. If you would like to further discuss any aspects of the Program, please contact Sarah. However, no formal interview is required. Usually, volunteers will meet with Sarah or Andy the day before commencing at the school to discuss the process, activities, duties, expectations etc.

14. Will there be someone there to help me when I arrive?

We have a coordinator based at all times in Siem Reap, so they can show you the ropes on your arrival.

15. Who do I contact?

The current on site volunteer coordinator in Siem Reap is Sarah Pycroft. You can contact her at sarah@aboutasiaschools.org

16. How do I get to the school?

Various options exist which can be discussed with our volunteer coordinator. The maximum cost would be $10 for a local tuktuk one way

17. How many children enrolled in the schools?

Prey Chrouk school has around 535 children attending the secondary school, and another 637 enrolled at the primary school. Click here to see for details of Krobe Riel, Austrian Primary and all our other schools.

18. Do I need to take anti-malarial tablets?

As the school is based in a rural part of Cambodia, we recommend that you do take anti-malarial tablets in addition to taking sensible precautions against mosquito bites.

19. Does ABOUTAsia Schools provide insurance for its volunteers?

No. You are responsible for your own insurance and should ensure that you are fully covered for injury and loss of possessions. This is very important!

20. Can you tell us more about accommodations?

we have three schools that offer accommodation nearby. See volunteer Page

21. Are there other volunteer opportunities elsewhere beside Siem Reap?

Yes. You can contribute to Cambodian education, rural development, and environmental conservation by volunteering with Conversations With Foreigners in Phnom Penh.

22. Why do I need to pay the bond deposit?

By paying the bond deposit, you are giving your assurance that you will show up after you accept the position we offer in the program. Your absence without notice will cause interuptions to the schools. See Volunteer

23. How do I pay the deposit?

We will send you the bond deposit instruction after you are offered a position.

24. How do I know your program really exist?

Our Facebook page is a great source of testimonials. In some cases, we provide you email addresses of our past volunteers (with their consent) from your own country or area. You can also note that ABOUTAsia Schools (formerly IAMCAMBODIA) has received full 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status from the IRS
